President's Message

Beverly BrooksI hope that everyone is enjoying their summer.  We are half way through 2012 and the EDA has already held a very successful fund raiser at the Columbus Centre in May and organized or participated in a number of outreach events throughout the city.  These events are a very important way of building a larger contingent of volunteers and a greater base of supporters between elections.

A Canada Day Picnic to celebrate Canada’s 145th birthday was held for residents of the riding on July 1 at Marshall McLuhan School on Avenue Road.  Entertainment was provided by talented singers and dancers from the constituency.  Minister Oliver spoke at the event, which was well attended.  The picnic  was organized by a very dedicated group of volunteers led by Hugh Samson, a director of the EDA board and Chair of the Election Readiness Committee. Hugh was assisted by Mike Freeland, Eric Cuzzolino, Cathy Ross, Peter Coy, Phillip Khaiat, Bob Amaron and Steven Cooke, as well as many others including students from Humber College where Hugh teaches.  The volunteers were on site two hours prior to the event for set up and stayed until all post event maintenance was completed. I would like to extend a huge thank you to everyone who helped to make the day the great success that it was.

The EDA also participated in a Philippines Independence Day picnic at Earl Bales Park and the Walk for Israel.  The EDA’s participation in the Earl Bales Park event on June 13 was organized by Peter Fyvie, the EDA’s Volunteer Chair. Peter and his wife, Loretta, set up a booth and decorated it with balloons. Several other EDA directors assisted Peter including Bob Amaron and Robin Martin. Both Joe Oliver and Mark Adler, Conservative MP for York Centre, attended the picnic and spoke. A number of EDA Directors participated in the Walk for Israel on May 21 with Joe Oliver including Bob Amaron, Sonia Light, Greg Kay and Josh Hollenberg. I wish to thank all the directors who participated in these events. Your support and enthusiasm are greatly appreciated.

Enjoy the rest of your summer!

- Beverly Brooks
