New Canada-Israel Energy R&D Fund

Natural Resources Minister Joe Oliver and Israeli Minister of Energy and Water Resources Dr. Uzi Landau announced on Oct. 29 a new $5-million fund to encourage Canadian and Israeli companies to collaborate on developing innovative energy technologies of interest to both countries.

The scope of the Canada–Israel Energy Science and Technology Fund is currently being developed by Natural Resources Canada and the Canada–Israel Industrial Research and Development Foundation (CIIRDF). The foundation is a bi-national organization that promotes collaborative R&D projects between Canada and Israel. Since its launch in 1994, the foundation has financed over 90 partnerships between over 160 companies from both countries.

Under the terms of the new agreement, the government of Canada will provide funding for the project for a three-year period, while the Government of Israel will provide funding on a project-by-project basis.

Israel is a world leader in renewable technology as lack of fossil fuels has made energy innovation a necessity. Recently, Israeli companies discovered natural gas offshore in the Mediterranean Sea and deposits of shale gas. Israel needs Canadian technology to develop these traditional energy supplies while Canada stands to benefit from Israel’s renewable energy knowledge and technology.
