Message from Joe Oliver

Joe OliverAs this is the first EDA newsletter since the federal election on May 2, I would like to thank everyone involved in the campaign for your tremendous support over the past four years, culminating in an extraordinary Get Out The Vote effort on E Day. As you know, in 2008 we built credibility by narrowing the gap from 23% to 4% and this time won by over 8%, joined by eight other Conservative candidates in Toronto, the first Conservative victories in 23 years.  That electoral success could not have happened without the tireless dedication of hundreds of volunteers.  As a result of all the door knocking, fundraising and phone calls, I am now honoured to be in the position to pledge to you that I will represent your values and interests for the next four years, to the best of my ability.

Under the leadership of Prime Minister Stephen Harper, Canadians across the country came together to elect a strong, stable, national majority Conservative Government.  Since that great day, your government has been working hard to deliver on our promises, including a low tax plan for jobs and growth.

On a personal basis, this has been a busy and exciting six months.  I was honoured by the Prime Minister to be appointed the Minister of Natural Resources, an important responsibility which encompasses oil and gas, mining, forestry and nuclear power. Canadians are blessed with abundant resources, which play a central role in our economy and, if managed properly, will contribute to our prosperity and security for generations to come. Indeed, Canada is a socially and environmentally responsible energy super power that can contribute to energy security for the world.  Of course, to achieve that goal we need to build the infrastructure to move our resources from where they are to where they are wanted, especially in the US and Asia.  How we confront opposition to those nation-building projects will determine our collective future.

This past summer we successfully completed the sale of the commercial division of Atomic Energy Canada Limited (AECL) to SNC Lavalin, a major Canadian company with a significant international presence. That decision saved over a thousand jobs, protected Canadian taxpayers and has given our nuclear industry its best chance for long-term success.

I have travelled across Canada, from Vancouver to St. John’s, as well as the US, Europe and most recently China and Japan, and am engaged in a national conversation with Canadians about the value of our resources to our welfare from coast to coast to coast.  I am representing our interests abroad and promoting Canada as a great trading country that is open for business here and has dynamic companies that are eager to invest internationally.

I have also been active here in Eglinton-Lawrence and usually have the opportunity to meet constituents on Friday and week-ends and to participate in numerous community events in the riding and the GTA. When Parliament rises for the holidays there will be a lot of time to get together with residents, hear their concerns and respond to their requests.  As you may know, we have a dedicated staff in our Constituency Office at 511 Lawrence West (416-781-5583) managed by Steven Cooke and assisted by Marianna Gagliardi and Greg Kay.

Recently, I participated in the ground-breaking ceremony for the Forest Hill Jewish Community Centre, attended the 12th annual Commanders Ball, hosted by the Knights of Rizal, and visited the world-class trans-generational brain centre at Baycrest.  I give speeches, talk to the press, go to TV and radio interviews and represent the government at announcements, some of which are reproduced on our website  On January 2 at 6:00 PM the EDA will be hosting a New Year’s levee at the Columbus Centre. I hope that you will all join me in a family get-together, open to everyone in the riding.

I am determined to be the Member of Parliament you want and need as we work together to make Canada, the greatest country in the world, an even better place for everyone. I also ask for your support as I continue to earn the confidence of the people in Eglinton-Lawrence and ensure that this riding remains blue for many years to come.

I wish you all the best for the holiday season.
